Traffic Rules : Part 2

This is the second part in last week’s Traffic Rules post that I originally did not intent to write. But seeing more about ‘cyclists’ and how they conduct themselves on the roads, that prompted me to make it.

I discovered a video on YouTube released by The Guardian that spoke about cyclists on the road and how other drivers feel about them. And the misconceptions and myths people believe about ‘cyclists’.

This video is extremely comprehensive in its case study and tells a lot about the feeling of people towards cyclists not only in the UK but almost everywhere in the world.

Watch the video before moving on.

People do need to shift the conversation from ‘cyclists’ (now you understand why I put the quotes) to car drivers. I’ll admit it, we’ve all seen those videos making fun of how riders band into people, cars, trucks and whatnot. As much as it hurts me, to see that, a lot of them did make mistakes but then again, it’s who the media wants to talk about (a messy concoction of conformity and confirmation biases). Apparently, a story where a ‘cyclist’ runs over a person has more juice than a car killing another person. We all saw the numbers.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to defend cyclists, we all make mistakes it’s what we focus on fixing, that matters.

I re-iterate this for ‘cyclists’ on the road : Follow them damn traffic rules! You’ll do the whole community a favour and everyone will be happy. After all, as Dame Sarah Store said, “it’s just people getting around and we need to have a little bit more courtesy towards each other” – truer words were never spoken.

Thats it for now guys, check out the previous post here if you haven’t already. Like this post if you liked it and follow TBN to get more biking stuff every week! See you next time!
